This beautiful c. 19th century portrait of a European consort of Mughal Emperor Akbar must have been a copy of an earlier portrait as the medium of oil was not practiced in India in the medieval period. The painting shows how skillfully the traditional Indian artists learnt the lessons of European naturalism. The wonderful way in which fur, jewellery and textile have been handled demands attention.
