Jane Buller, the sitter in this elegant portrait, married William Lemon in 1771 and bore ten children. Lord Lemon commissioned George Romney to paint half-length portraits of himself and his wife in 1788, when Lady Lemon was forty-years old. She sat for the painting on six occasions in Romney’s London studio. Posing the sitter in an armchair against a landscape background became a common convention in later Georgian British portraiture. Romney portrays his subject with a gentle touch.
